One of four exit words
Leaving Quiet
Quiet is the urge to fill every silent gap so your own thoughts never catch up. The phone works like a low radio left on all day.
Where it shows up
It waits for you in the parked car before you walk inside, or in bed when the lights go out. The screen acts like a low radio so you do not have to hear your own head.
The pattern
You aren't browsing toward anything. You are browsing away from what happens when the room goes quiet. The phone is an anesthetic poured into every gap, from the parked car to the bathroom to the dark bedroom, so an unexamined feeling never catches up to you.
Tonight's action
sit for two minutes in the car or on the edge of the bed with the phone out of reach and just notice what shows up.
What the research says about it
The 2024 Peking University experiment found that swiping changed thinking more than the videos themselves. Each swipe is a tiny interruption, and a head interrupted all day forgets how to sit in silence.
The 2025 mobile internet study showed attention improving after two weeks of blocking. For Quiet, the first days of silence can feel louder, and that is the part worth staying for.
