Leaving Presence
Presence is the urge to leave a room while your body stays in it. The talk slows, a child is on the rug, and the screen feels lighter than the people.
Where it shows up
It happens when you are in a room with people you care about and the conversation slows down. A phone screen feels lighter and simpler than the weight of a real room.
The pattern
Being fully inside a room with another human being requires weight: a child on the rug, a partner at dinner, an unscripted silence. The phone gives you a weightless place to hide while your body stays in the chair.
Tonight's action
at the next meal or conversation, leave the phone in another room and ask one more question when the talk goes quiet.
What the research says about it
The 2024 Peking University experiment showed that the swiping itself, not the content, changed how people thought afterwards. A table conversation cannot compete with a swipe on speed, so it starts to feel heavy.
In the 2025 mobile internet study, daily phone time roughly halved during the two-week block, and screen time climbed again once it ended. For Presence, the room has to be arranged so the phone is somewhere else, not only resisted.
